Super 10 Series Round 4 Wrap Up
Keith Blatch
The Westgate Esab Super 10 Series traveled to the beautiful Darling Downs for round four of the prestigious Litre Sprintcar tournament at Toowoomba’s Charlton Raceway last weekend the 1st of December. Fourteen drivers battled under threatening skies, but it was local driver and last years series champ Keith Blatch who won the feature after an enthralling battle with race long leader David Fanning. Third across the line was another local hero in the form of David Whell who is showing good pace aboard his brand new racer this season. With indifferent weather surrounding the South East corner of the state for much of the week it looked like the only winner for the weekend would be the indoor entertainment venues, as rain, rain and more rain fell in the preceding days to the event. Fortunately though, the rain stayed away when needed and all of the events on the program ran without delay, however the typically cold and windy conditions of Charleton made the track quite slick and variable, catching out several drivers throughout the heats. New South Wales visitor D.J Raw made the trip north to check out the venue for this years Australian Title and conduct some “research” to gain an advantage for the big race during Easter next year.
Once again the series dealt out some hard luck stories and produced a mixed bag of results that has seen the lead in the series change hands several times over each and every round. This is by far the most hotly contested series we have seen in many years and once again proves that consistency is paramount to overall success. Round three winner Scott Harth relinquished his lead in the series after experiencing a night he’d rather forget, firstly experiencing ignition dramas in warm ups (a crew member from another team raced back into town to fetch another part just in time for the start of heat 1) and then had differential woes that forced him to park the car on the trailer without even turning a lap in anger. Dave Fanning also experienced diff problems and had to do a quick diff exchange between races. Unfortunately the spare diff had a different ratio which prevented the team from showing the true potential of the car.
Heat 1 was taken out by Keith Blatch who quickly pulled onto the infield after the race and handed over to Brad Hilder for the second heat which Brad went on to win also.
Heat 3 saw Keith Blatch continue his fine form with another win over Bruce Ayers and Dave Fanning, with the final heat being won by Peter Nankervis from Dave Whell and Hilder.
The heat racing was fantastic, with plenty of passing and spirited racing giving the fans value for money despite the low car count.
Ten cars lined up for the feature with the fast guys starting from the back, in what was set to be a hard fought 15 laps for the round 4 win. Wayne Iacono fell victim to the slick track on turn two at the start half spinning and then falling over and bringing on the reds before a lap was penned in the book. Unfortunately Wayne broke a wing mount and was unable to continue. At the restart Fanning jumped away to a handy lead with Whell, Nankervis, Blatch and Ayers fighting it out for track position with cars going helter skelter around the arena. By mid race distance the pace had settled and the field was spread evenly, except for Blatch who was making heady progress towards the leader. With 5 laps left Blatch caught Fanning in lapped traffic and executed an inside move that momentarily captured the lead. But Fanning was not about to relinquish his grasp on the trophy and fought gamely on the outside of Blatch, the pair running wheel to wheel, Blatch on the bottom and Fanning up high as they battled cleanly through lapped traffic. With the flag in sight and Blatch with a slight lead, Fanning put a slide job on and regained the lead only to drift high on exit and allow Blatch a clean run to the line to beat Fanning by half a car length in what was easily the most enthralling Litre Feature Race for many seasons. Congratulations must go to both drivers for their clean driving and tenacity displayed on the track. Third home was Dave Whell, who worked a marathon through the week to completely rebuild a broken motor from the previous round. Fourth went to a deserving Peter Nankervis who turned around his misfortune from round 3 with Bruce Ayers filling 5th place. Wade Pascoe is getting faster with each race meeting he goes to and wound up in sixth place and also made the first “B” grader home bonus worthwhile after losing a wheel in heat 4 while leading. Rounding out the field was John Cariola and Shane Matthews who is still coming to grips with some engine tuning issues.
Round five of the Westgate Super 10 series lies ahead, once again at Toowoomba on the 22nd, and will kick off a quick fire 3 rounds of the series taking in Lismore on Boxing day and Brisbane on new years day. Drivers keen on running the 3 round mini-series are advised to contact Plucka on 0419 715 636 to nominate. NSW drivers are especially encouraged to enter, particularly for the Lismore round as the promoter Dave Lander has supported Litres in the past and is looking to do so again in NSW on the north coast. He is keen to run a blue ribbon event next season, dependant upon the litres attitude and car numbers this season. On behalf of the QLD Litre Sprintcar fraternity, we wish all the fans, promoters, sponsors, drivers and crew, a very merry Christmas and safe and successful New Year. Hope to see you all at the BBQ’s and party over the break.
Harth Scores Victory In Super 10 Round 3
Scott Harth
Scott Harth survived what was an extremely tough night of racing at BIS in round 3 of the lucrative Westgate Esab Super 10 Series to claim his first feature win in many seasons, aboard the Maryborough based #59 rocket. Only 3 cars crossed the line at the end of the feature with hard luck stories a plenty up and down the pit stalls at the end of the night. Second survivor to cross the line was Michael Gollagher who was running fourth until the final lap when Wade Pascoe half spun while running second and was collected by the luckless 3rd place runner Alan Brosnan. Brosnan came to a hault on the infield as Harth greeted the chequers whilst Pascoe managed to limp to the line and claim 3rd.
The night started in encouragingly enough with 12 cars and 13 drivers present however with the program running extremely late due to a serious accident on the track, the Litre heats were combined meaning Brad Ayers was to sit out yet again, unable to share the ride in his fathers car. Heat one was won in convincing style by David Fanning who looked unbeatable in the silver and blue #31 racer with Dave Whell and Bruce Ayers filling the minor placings.
Heat two saw a fantastic drive by John Cariola earn him his maiden win in the litres over Scott Doyle and Scott Harth. The win was to be soured however by the loss of the rear brake caliper during the heat, which would unfortunately park the car in the trailer prematurely for the night.
Heat three was won by a much improved Michael Gollagher from Bruce Ayers (consistently racking up the points yet again) over the QLD#17 of Alan Brosnan.
Dave Fanning was to lead the feature from the front row and start as the even odds favourite to win the 3rd round of the Westgate Super Ten series. As promised he stormed away from the field and established an incredible gap in the opening laps until a fuel pump belt let go and spelled the end for the Brisbane speedster. Bruce Ayers, Dave Whell, Shane Mathews and Andrew Fanning all failed to start the feature due to engine woes, so it was up to Harth, Nankervis, Gollagher and co. to put on a show for the crowd which they did at the restart after Fannings misfortune. Leading the field away now was Harth with Scott Doyle, Peter Nankervis Wade Pascoe, Alan Brosnan and Gollagher all nose to tail as the field sped towards the cone until poor Scott Doyle stumbled, resulting in a pile up that saw Nankervis on his lid and out of action. Once the dust had settled the rest of the field settled into a rhythm with Doyle challenging hard for the lead and Pascoe and Brosnan having their customary battle royal further down the pack. Then it was Scott Doyles turn for horrid luck with the #8 machine blowing an engine and doing extensive damage. This left Harth unchallenged to the line while the remaining three cars battled it out for the minors. But it was to be Harths night who deservedly won the cash after surviving the carnage and keeping his nose clean all night and also claiming a slender lead in the series points to boot!
Super 10 round 2 to Ayers
Bruce Ayers
Brisbane Litre Sprintcar veteran Bruce Ayers dominated the feature in round 2 of the QLD Litre Sprintcars Super 10 series last Saturday night taking the lead in the series in the process. Ayers had a faultless night winning both of his heats and leading every lap of the feature to take home a handsome paycheque for his efforts at nights end. Second place went to a very quick Keith Blatch who came from the rear twice to beat home 3rd placed Andrew Fanning who is having a consistent series so far and now places second to Ayers on points. There were many hard luck incidents and accidents throughout the night. Last weeks feature winner Dave Fanning never turned a wheel parking the car after engine starts ith an electrical fault. A similar story befell Scott Doyle who broke a rocker during heat 1, with Jason Busk Following him to the infield with a smoldering windowed engine which will set back his series hopes. The second round of heats was a disaster for newcomer Chris Wilson who inverted the #89 machine when the left rear wheel parted company with the vehicle. Although only enduring a light roll Chris was taken away for medical attention for a suspected neck injury which delayed proceedings for nearly half an hour. Wayne Icono attended the meeting with a new racer that was still being finished as the first round of heats hit the track and unfortunately a gremlin prevented Wayne from competing after his engine start. Sixteen cars and seventeen drivers made the effort to participate however by feature time only 12 cars were left standing!
Other heat wins went to Sid Whittaker who drove splendidly to hold off Scott Harth and Andrew Fanning with Keith Blatch taking the other heat win in this pool.
Bruce Ayers being highest point scorer on the night drew the inversion and started himself off pole with Scott Harth beside but it was Ayers who won the race to turn one, with a cautious Harth being shuffled back in the pack by turn three. Within 5 laps Ayers had established a small but comfortable gap with a battle royale going on behind between Andrew Fanning, Harth, Whittaker and Nankervis. Travelling quickly behind was a freight train with he much improved Wade Pascoe, Brosnan, David Whell and John Cariola. At half race distance Blatch attempted an inside passing move on Brosnan that brought on the yellows and saw Brosnans car towed from the field and Blatch relegated to the rear for his indiscretion. Ayers paced the field away again at the restart and never looked troubled out front, but the race was on in fierce fashion behind for the minor placings. Blatch had seemed to have found a groove and made his move in lapped traffic taking Whittaker and Harth before disposing of Fanning to claim second in sight of the flag. Whilst Ayers dominated the night, and deserved his victory, the highlight had to be the battle for the minor placings which kept the crown enthralled and on edge the entire race.
There is now a two week rest before the series returns to BIS for round 3 with even more cars expected to nominate for the next round of the lucrative series.

Dave Whell #27
Fanning Takes Super 10 Round 1
Dave Fanning
Round 1 of the QLD Litre Sprintcars Super 10 series kicked off in Brisbane on the 27th of October with a superb display of driving taking Dave Fanning to the winners circle in the 15 lap feature race.
A strong field of racers met to contest the first round of the lucrative series with a notable absentee being last years series champion Keith Blatch. Three heats preceded the all important feature race with victories going the way of Scott Doyle (Ht1), Dave Fanning (Ht2) and Bruce Ayers (Ht3), howing that the competition was tough and that no one had their hand on the considerable feature race prize money.
Feature race action saw Andrew Fanning jump away to a comfortable margin within the first four laps before a stoppage bunched the field once again. Andrew Fanning got a great restart at the cone and set about again establishing a lead but the rest of the field had other ideas as they chased hard approaching lapped traffic. Dave Fanning was on a masterful charge chasing down his younger brother and caught him as Andrew stumbled slightly in lapped traffic. From then on there was no stopping the #31 rocket ship as he paced away to an easy win over younger brother Andrew and a fast and consistent Scott Harth who was having a great start to his season placing third. Fourth went to the ever consistent Bruce Ayers, followed by Peter Nankervis, Jason Busk, Wade Pascoe and Shane Mathews.
The next round is to be held in Toowoomba on the 3rd of November with several new drivers and Toowoomba locals expected to join the series and boost car numbers even further.
Jason Busk #15
Super 10 Series Set to Sizzle
Last years series champion Keith Blatch
Next weekend (27/10/07) at BIS sees the largest and most lucrative Litre Sprintcar series ever attempted hit the track for round one of the Super 10 Series. The series brain child Andrew Fanning has spent countless hours organizing the event with the help of committee members throughout the state and has so far had substantial sponsorship pledged from far and wide in what is anticipated to be the biggest payout in Litre Sprintcar racing history.
Surfing off the back of last years Orccon series success which paid the winner in excess of $3000 total prize money, this years series will run over 10 rounds with prize money redistributed to pay further back for the expected larger fields.
“This years series has been a very time consuming activity for me and without the support of my brother Dave and other members of the Litre Sprintcar Racing community we would never have got such a large series up and running for this season. Now all we need is the support of drivers locally and interstate to make the event as big as we have envisaged!” “I have my car for sale at the moment but no matter what happens I will give my full support to the series and follow through to the end of the season with or without a race car” said Fanning emphatically earlier this week.
Last years series champion Keith Blatch smashed the opposition late in the season but so far there is no word from their camp as for their plans for the series title defence. The Fanning brothers along with Scott Harth and Scott Doyle would have to be serious contenders for this years crown but a plethora of other drivers including Bruce Ayers, Sid Whittaker, Dave Whell, and Jason Busk all have aspirations and the talent to be number one at the end of the season. There are a number of new drivers and improved “B” graders who will be fighting it out for the rookie and “B” grade crown and there’s no doubt there could be some surprise upsets for feature race wins with the draw and invert formula in place for the tornanment.
All drivers and crew are reminded that Helmets on Quad bikes will be compulsory for all series rounds throughout the year. No helmet – no quad!
