Fanning Scores Maiden Title Victory

The words on everyones lips at the completion of the 2009 QLD Litre Sprintcar Title in Maryborough was "Wow what a race!"  In what could only be described as one of the best Litre Sprintcar races ever, Queenslander David Fanning took a stunning victory in a race that ran a full 25 laps without a yellow.  Another Queensland local Sid Whittaker, played a calculated race to finish second, but just couldn't find the speed to reach Fanning who had judged the lapped traffic to perfection to open up a comfortable gap by races end.  A fantastic and hard fought battle for 3rd between Brad Ayers, D.J Raw and Ben Hilder, ultimately fell the way of Raw, with the closest of margins between the three drivers as the chequers flew.  It was an impressive race from the get-go with 18 drivers gridded for a grueling 25 lap event on a beautifully prepared Maryborough track.

Keith Blatch and Ben Hilder won their respective dashes to earn the right to start off the front row, but it would be Blatch and a good majority of the inside row that would reach turn one first after young rookie Hilder blundered the start and had a mountain of work to do to catch up.  As usual the first 5 laps were frantic yet measured as Blatch opened up a sizeable lead with the field behind putting on a fantastic display of two and 3 wide racing.  The race for 2nd through 8th was edge your seat stuff, between Fanning, Raw, Whittaker, Hilder, Freeman, Ayers and Brierly.  Scott Doyle who was extremely quick all weekend started at the rear of the field in David Atwoods car after the Suzuki powerplant melted a piston in the dash, but couldn't make up ground on the leaders.  The race changed complection once Blatch reached lapped traffic.  Lap after lap Blatch tried to find a way around several slower cars but with no luck.

The seven car freight train headed by Fanning quickly closed the gap on Blatch and then it was on for young and old.  For a couple of laps Blatch held the pack at bay until Fanning pulled off a stunning pass in turn three as Blatch went to the top to try and find a way around.  Before he could blink an eye Blatch had sliped back to sixth and had a mammoth task ahead with a car that was not going forward as well as the five drivers ahead.  Fanning worked the lapped traffic masterfully and opened up a buffer that would ultimately see him win his maiden title feature, and a victory that will be savoured and remembered for a long while to come.  The battle for the minors now became the focus of the race as a pack of about ten cars (lapped cars included) diced for position.  It was a credit to all the drivers not to create a stoppage with plenty of respect given to one another whilst still fighting a torrid battle.  Plenty of credit must also go to compact turned Litre / Lightning Sprint competitor Tony Brearly who drove exceptionally well to keep pace with the leaders in only his second winged event.

Overall the two nights of racing were fantastic with the only major incidents for the whole weekend being a huge flip by Jason Busk at the start of heat 7 and a ride on the wild side for newcomer Luke Harper after slamming the main straight wall in heat 8.  Credit must be given to all drivers, crew and officials for their exemplary behaviour and spirit, to create a Title that will be hard to top for a long time to come.

Clayton Priest Takes out the final Rnd of the Shootout Series and the first feature race held at the new Dubbo Speedway.

It was only a small field of Nine cars turned up for the rescheduled Final Rnd of the Shootout Series. Although it was a small field it was packed with experience and pace.
It was not only the final Rnd of the country series but also the eagerly anticipated first race meeting for the Litre Sprintcars at Dubbo Speedway.
The first thing everyone did was get of the car and go straight up to the fence and look at this awesome new track that everyone has been talking about. And let me tell you it is everything that you have heard about. High Banked ,Very Wide and VERY FAST.
The afternoon started off quickly with racing starting at 4pm. The format consisted of 4 heats and a 20 lap feature race. The racing was very entertaining even with the small car count. As per usual two and three wide racing was displayed by all the drivers as they all dialled their cars into this awesome new track.

Heat 1 was won by Drew Keith followed home by Craig Geering and AJ McTaggart
Heat 2 was taken out by Craig Geering followed home by Clayton Priest and Brett Davies
Heat 3 was taken out by AJ McTaggart followed home by Clayton Priest and Brett Davies
Heat 4 was taken out by Brett Davies followed home by Craig Geering and AJ McTaggart
The 20 lap feature lined up with the Heat winners starting in the last two rows.
A much improved David Atwood took control of the feature in the early laps. Clayton Priest was working the middle of the track well and passed Atwood for the lead on lap 4 and was never headed. Clayton lead the remaining 17 laps with a flurry of overtaking happening behind. The battle for secon, through to seventh was tight with positions changing every lap.

The feature ran flag to flag with no stoppages. The final positions were,
1st – Clayton Priest
2nd –Dean Meadows
3rd –AJ Mctaggert
4th – Craig Geering
5th – Brett Davies
6th – David fuller
7th – David Atwood

The only casualties we had throughout the night were Drew Keith with some engine issues during the feature and Paul Holliday who suffered some battery issues early on and did not finish the feature due to some fuel issues.
A BIG thanks must go to Tony Anderson and everyone that helped out on the night.
Look forward to seeing everyone at the AGM and Presentation
Regards,
Clayton Priest

Drew Keith Brings Home Outstanding NSW Championship Podium Result:

Heading into last Saturday night’s NSW Litre Sprintcar Championship at Gilgandra Speedway in Western NSW the aim for Drew Keith was to just finish inside the top 10 of the feature race but he certainly exceeded that goal by finishing in an outstanding second place behind winner Sean Barnett.

In what was only his second visit to Gilgandra Speedway, Drew reacquainted himself with the track by posting a commanding victory in the opening qualifying heat race for the NSW Championship and he was able to carry that momentum all the way through until the fall of the chequered flag in the NSW Championship deciding feature race.

Qualifying fifth for the feature race, that was set down for 30 laps in distance, after finishing in seventh and fourth place in his remaining two qualifying heat races, Drew made a blinder of a start and by the 10th lap he had moved from position five into second place. In a feature race that went flag to flag Drew kept his composure and ended up finishing in second place.

“To finish on the podium in a NSW Championship is a fantastic result and honestly I was hoping to finish somewhere inside the top 10 and never in my wildest dreams was I expecting to finish on the podium,” Drew explained. “A lot my rivals were running the bottom of the track and I knew I had no other choice but to try and go around them if I was going to progress forward. In my earlier heat races I was trying to run the top of the track and the more I did it the more confident felt and I believe that played a major part in my second place finish in the feature race.”

Throughout the feature race Drew had lost the use of his brakes aboard his NSW # 63 Hedweld Engineering backed E15 Nissan Pulsar powered Infinity and with the 30 lap feature race going flag to flag he was forced to negotiate through a lot of lapped traffic.

“All night I had brakes problems and it was just something that I had to get used to and I had to be a little bit more careful as I had no use of my brakes especially during the feature race,” Drew said. “Apart from the no brakes problem I was forced to get through plenty of lapped traffic as it is a new experience for me, as most of the time in Litre Sprintcars has seen me being the lapped car and now the roles were reversed. The more I went through lapped traffic the easier it became and there were only a few times where I had to be careful when passing slower cars.”

The 25-year-old would like to say special thanks to both Ray Wright and Gerard Burke (the constructor of the Infinity chassis) for all their help on the night along with his girlfriend Dallas, the rest of his pit crew and supporters Hedweld Engineering, Muswellbrook Signs and Windsor Engines.

Now on a wave of confidence, Drew is looking forward to the remainder of the 2008/09 season. This Saturday night (March 28) he returns to his home track Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway and before the season is out he is set to travel to Gilgandra Speedway and Morris Park Speedway and also make a few trips up to Queensland to Charlton Raceway and Maryborough Speedway.

An interesting fact about Drew is that he is one the very few race car drivers within Australian Motorsport that is confined to a wheelchair due to being a paraplegic and his Litre Sprintcar is fitted with a steering wheel, designed by Drew himself, which controls both the accelerator and brake systems.
